Who is an international student?
The term “international student” may be defined differently across university departments and units. However, International Student Services specifically supports students on the F and J student visas.
F & J Students
F-1 and J-1 students are usually on an immigration record held by the University of Washington and are usually pursuing a degree or here for a short-term exchange. They can be assisted by International Student Services.
F & J students must follow specific immigration regulations related to enrollment and employment.
Other Students
Other non-citizen students may be enrolled at the University of Washington. However, ISS does not maintain their immigration records. Our team cannot advise them on matters related to their immigration status, and they should consult an immigration attorney if needed.
How does ISS support international students?
International Student Services provides advising and processing services for F and J international students including:
- discussing student academic plans in relation to their immigration status,
- reporting certain elements such as arrival and enrollment to DHS,
- checking student compliance with enrollment requirements and authorizing exceptions, and
- processing student employment authorization.
