After your requested schedule change (including adding a course, dropping a course, changing sections, etc.), will you still be registered full-time (at least 12 credits)?* You are generally required to register for at least 10 credits. After your requested schedule change (including adding a course, dropping a course, changing sections, etc.), will you still be registered full-time (at least 10 credits)? If you are NOT dropping below full-time, you do not need permission from ISS to change your schedule. Instead, complete the Registration Transaction Form and go to the Office of the University Registrar, 2nd floor of Schmitz Hall, during business hours to make your schedule change.

Student visa holders are generally required to register full-time, with few exceptions.
Review the exceptions to the full-time registration rule.
Do you qualify for one of the exceptions to the full-time registration rule?* If you do not qualify for an exception to the full-time registration rule, then dropping below full-time credits could violate your student visa status. This is a serious decision to make. Status violations cause a temporary loss of benefits (like on-campus work permission) and can make visa renewals and travel more difficult. Regaining legal status after a status violation can be a complex and expensive process.
If you violate the immigration regulations you may begin to accrue days of unlawful presence. 180 days of unlawful presence may result in a bar from reentering the US. Please see Government Changes to "Unlawful Presence" for more information.
However, students may be able to regain valid F-1 status either through a reinstatement application to U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services or through travel and reentry with a new I-20/new SEVIS record. The appropriate option will depend on your individual circumstances. Review the ISS information about how to regain F-1 status after a status violation. To proceed with dropping a class, or if you would like to discuss your situation in more detail with an ISS adviser, please complete our Contact ISS Form and include as much detail as possible in your message.
